Some came to the Islamic Community Center in St. Louis on Thursday night to learn more about Islam.
But most came because they’d gone more than 14 hours without food.
Thursday marked the first of a series of public iftars, or meals that break the traditional fast during the Islamic lunar calendar month of Ramadan.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations partnered with local mosques to hold a series of “open door” informational sessions.
Thursday’s session began with talks by leaders, including CAIR Executive Director Faizan Syed and Imam Muhamed Hasic, a quiz and a question-and-answer session.
Members of the mosque gradually filtered in, as Syed counted down to sunset, joking that Ramadan was like “30 days of New Year’s.”
