This annual event brings together peoples of all faiths to visit their local Islamic Center, participate in the Iftar (breaking of the fast) meal, enjoy an international dinner, and engage in productive dialogue. This year event is hosted by the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis (IFGSTL), the Missouri Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MO), and the Islamic Information Center of St. Louis (IICSTL).

As-Salamu Alaykum, a greeting of peace. We would like to invite you to our 4th annual “Sharing Ramadan” open house. This annual event will be held on Wednesday, June 7th from 6:00 P.M.—9:30 P.M. This event encourages all Americans to visit your local Islamic Center, take a guided tour of the Masjid, enjoy a delicious meal, hear presentations on Islam, engage in dialogue, witness the Muslim prayers, and so much more.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar. More than one billion Muslims worldwide celebrate Ramadan by fasting and building a closer relationship with Allah (God). During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and intimate relations with their spouse from break of dawn to sunset. The fast is performed to learn discipline, self-restraint, and generosity, while obeying God’s commandments. Fasting (along with the declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and pilgrimage to Mecca) is one of the “five pillars” of Islam. The end of Ramadan will be marked by communal prayers called “Eid ul-Fitr” or Feast of the Fast-Breaking, on June 25th. (Because Islam operates on a lunar calendar system, the actual date is governed by sighting of the new moon.)
Ramadan is special because the Qur’an (Islamic holy scripture) was first revealed during this month. Muslims around the world strive to spiritually purify themselves by trying to abstain from all that is evil in speech and action. It is also recommended that Muslims read as much as possible from the Qur’an during this month.
When you arrive at the Daar-Ul-Islam Masjid, you will be given a guided tour of the building. After the tour, guests will be given a presentation on Islam and engage in dialogue, followed by the Iftar (breaking of the fast) meal along with an international dinner. Iftar is an integral part of Muslim community life during the sacred month of Ramadan. At sunset every night, Muslims around the world gather in their homes and mosques to break their fast together with their families and communities.
Guests are welcome to observe the sunset prayers after the Iftar meal. Your host will direct you to an appropriate place to sit and watch. After the Adhan (call to prayer), Muslims move to the prayer hall and line up for the congregational prayer. They will form tight ranks, a symbol of unity and equality within the Muslim community. After the conclusion of the prayer, dinner will be served.
