On Sunday August 16th, the St. Louis Chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-STL) held a "Know Your Rights" presentation at the West Florissant Islamic Center. Speaking to an audience of over 30 worshippers, Executive Director Faizan Syed spoke about rights and responsibilities when dealing with law enforcement, suffering discrimination in the workplace, and much more. "If you believe you are the victim of discrimination at work then tell human resources" explained Faizan Syed, "It's important that you document everything and find witnesses. All of this will help your case".
The audience of mainly Nigerian members of the Muslim community asked several questions including wanting clarifications about scam callers. "If you get a call from someone stating they are from the IRS or a collection company and they threaten you with arrest, deportation, or demand money from Money Gram then you know it's a complete fake. Just hangup the phone and call us so we can report it to authorities".
CAIR-STL is dedicated to building grassroots support within the American Muslim community. We believe that by holding these types of outreach and community engagement programs that we are building more engaged and well informed citizens.
