(ST. LOUIS, MO, 3/25/2019) – On March 26, Muslims for a Better America (MBA), CAIR-Kansas and the Missouri Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MO), will host the 5th annual Missouri Muslim Capitol Day in Jefferson City, Mo.
The daylong event brings together Missouri Muslims and their allies to Jefferson City to make Missouri a more welcoming place for all people.
WHAT: Missouri Muslim Capitol Day
WHEN: Tuesday, March 26, Rally on Front Steps of Capitol Building at 10:30 A.M.
WHERE: Missouri State Capitol Building, 201 W Capitol Ave, Jefferson City, MO 65101

Participants in Capitol day will hold meetings with their elected officials, build relationships and discuss issues of concern. Before leaving the Capitol, Muslim participants will hold a prayer at 1:30 P.M. in the 3rd floor Rotunda.
This year participants are introducing a bill to recognize the contributions of Missouri Muslims titled, “Muslim Heritage Day.” Similar resolutions have passed the Congress in 2018.
“Capitol Day is our community’s opportunity to build bridges with elected officials and ensure our voices are heard,” said Faizan Syed, executive director of CAIR-Missouri. “We hope to rally lawmakers to recognize the contributions of our community to the state and pass this ‘Heritage Day’ resolution as well as protect our constitutional right to engage in peaceful boycott of Israel.”
“We believe in empowering American Muslims to become more civically engaged,” said Saad Amir, executive director of MBA. “What better way to build bridges and immerse our community in the democratic process then to have them visit the State Capitol Building and see how laws are passed.”
One of the bills the group will advocate against is S.B. 308 and H.B. 1011, which would restrict the first amendment right to boycott in order to protect Palestinian rights in the State of Missouri. The group believes these bills are unconstitutional, if passed will invite lawsuits similar to those in Kansas, and target core protected First Amendment rights. In 2018 CAIR-Missouri was a part of the coalition that organized to defeat the passage of a similar bill.
