The Jacoby Arts Center participated in Small Town – Big World for a second year and brought back last year’s well-received program, “Meet a Muslim.” One of those taking part was Moji Sidiqi of Ballwin, Missouri, who was born in Afghanistan.
“Our main goal is to interact with our fellow brothers and sisters, whoever they may be, and we hope they will ask us questions,” Sidiqi said. “A lot of people think that Islam is a terrorist religious institution when really the word ‘Islam’ derives from the word ‘salaam,’ which means ‘peace.’ We are peace-loving, God-fearing human beings. There is a very small group of people in the world that do crazy, unbelievably horrible, inhumane things and then misrepresent the majority.”
Sidiqi had numerous colorful pieces of clothing on display that she crafted by hand.
“I design and make clothing for women like myself who love fashion and different fabrics and textiles, who want to look good and stay up-to-date, and yet dress modestly,” Sidiqi said. “So you see, you can stay modest and also look beautiful at the same time.”
