Missouri Groups Denounce SCOTUS Decision to Allow Muslim Ban to Remain in Effect
(ST. LOUIS, MO., 6/26/18) – Muslims for a Better America (MBA), the Imam Council of Metropolitan St. Louis (ICMSTL), the ACLU of Missouri, and the Missouri Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MO) denounce the Supreme Court of the United States’ decision to allow Muslim Ban 3.0 to remain in effect.
In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court upheld the Trump administration’s third Muslim ban.Today’s decision blocks immigrants and temporary visitors from several Muslim-majority countries. CAIR, the American Civil Liberties Union and other partner organizations have challenged every version of the ban.
"Today's ruling sits alongside other shameful Supreme Court decisions allowing for Japanese internment and segregation as among the nation’s most shameful,” said CAIR-MO Executive Director Faizan Syed.
“This sends the clear message that religious-based discrimination is tolerable so long as it is framed in a way that appears superficially neutral toward religion.”
," said MBA Director Saad Omar.
“Today’s ruling will go down in history as one of the Supreme Court’s failures. It echoes the Korematsu decision upholding Japanese-American imprisonment. For Missourians, it brings to mind the court’s Dred Scott decision, which failed to uphold our nation’s most basic principles of freedom and equality,” said ACLU of Missouri Executive Director Jeffrey A. Mittman. “This decision unthinkingly accepts a flimsy national security excuse for the ban instead of taking seriously the president’s own explanation for his action. It is ultimately the people of this country who will determine our nation’s character and future. The public is needed more than ever to ensure our elected officials take action to rescind and dismantle Trump’s Muslim ban.”
“We are truly saddened by the adverse impact this decision will have on Muslim families” said Mufti Asif Umar, spokesperson for ICMSTL.
In its decision, the Supreme Court granted extreme deference to the Trump Administration, which gives the administration the green light to inject discrimination back into our immigration system.

In the Supreme Court, CAIR filed an amicus brief on behalf of six individuals who successfully obtained an injunction against Muslim Ban 3.0 from a federal court in Maryland.
