The Missouri chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) publicly announced today they are calling for his resignation.

“Anyone who shares such anti-Muslim, racist and anti-immigrant views has no business serving in a leadership position for any educational institution. Chairman Heyen should resign from his post,” said CAIR-Missouri Executive Director Faizan Syed in a release. “We urge Lewis & Clark Community College to thoroughly investigate this matter and ensure that the college remains a welcoming place for all of its students.”

CAIR Missouri and several other local groups are preparing a peaceful demonstration before next week’s Board of Trustees meeting.

CAIR – Missouri showcased some of the posts attributed to Heyen's page especially inflammatory towards Islam. One said, “Anyone notice that there is no terrorism in Iceland or Japan? (Quick fact-check, there have been awful terrorist attacks in Japan) Weird coincidence, there are no Muslims there either." (There are in fact Muslims in both nations).

The Missouri chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Missouri), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Heyen to resign — or for the university to force his resignation.

“We urge Lewis & Clark Community College to thoroughly investigate this matter and ensure that the college remains a welcoming place for all of its students,” CAIR-Missouri Executive Director Faizan Syed said in a statement. 

Umama Khenissi, a progressive Muslim organizer from St. Louis City, said the messages and visuals are damaging to all people throughout our entire metro area.

The Missouri chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations recently released “An Educator’s Guide to Ramadan and Accommodating Muslim Students” to help schools better understand and accommodate Muslim students during this time. It gives clarity on things such as whether students should participate in physical education and how to deal with medication for fasting students.

Joining guest host Jim Kirchherr on Friday's St. Louis on the Air to talk about how schools can help Muslim students observing their religious obligation were CAIR’s executive director Faizan Syed, O’Fallon Township high school student Rawan Hamed and Imam Djilali Kacem of Dar Al-Jalal Islamic Center.
