“When instructing their Recruitment Specialist to deny Ms. Ali an interview, Securitas relied at least in part, but likely entirely, on the fact that Ms. Ali wears the hijab as part of her adherence to the Islamic faith,” said Robert West, civil rights attorney with CAIR-Missouri. “We believe that this is a case of employment discrimination under the laws of Missouri and the United States, and in pursuing this case, we hope to achieve justice for Ms. Ali and anyone else who has ever been discriminated against similarly.”
“The mainstreaming of Islamophobia has made it much harder for American Muslims to gain employment because of religious discrimination,” said Faizan Syed, executive director of CAIR-MO. “We hope this lawsuit will send a clear message to all employers to follow the law and not engage in discriminatory hiring practices”.
The complaint requests that current and former Muslim job applicants receive monetary damages, as well as pre-judgment and post-judgment interest, attorneys’ fees, and other costs of litigation. Additionally, the complaint also requests that the case be certified as a class action and that Securitas be prevented from continuing with similar conduct in the future.
