Panel discusses media coverage of Islam, hate crime against Muslims and travel ban

Faizan Syed CAIR Missouri Mizzou Panel IslamophobiaCOLUMBIA — Faizan Syed posed a question Monday to non-Muslim people in the audience: "What is the most important belief in Islam?"

An audience member answered but was incorrect. Nobody else offered a guess.

"To believe in one God alone, Allah," Syed said. 

Syed was one of the four speakers at a forum Monday night called "Fueling Hate? The News Media, Bias and Islam," which sought to create discussion on education about Islam, trends in hate crime in America, and media coverage of Islam. About 40 people attended the forum at the Reynolds Journalism Institute. It was organized by Debra Mason, director of the MU Center on Religion and the Professions.
